Anonymous is it a blessing or a curse?!?

In today's world the computer and the Internet consume a lot of it. Whether it is for school, work, looking up information or for individual/personal use it plays a role in every one's lives today. From the aspect of individual/personal use one of those is blogging. There are a lot of sites to blog from on the Internet. While an individual has to initiate the blog and posts. The big question is being anonymous a blessing or a curse. Everyone has there own opinions and I think it could go either way.

Being anonymous would be a blessing in some aspects in that you could post anything within judgment and not be responsible for it. You could post personal problems you might be having and get feedback from others and no one has to know who you are. I think this would be a great way of getting information. People might also be more forth coming on issues if it where anonymous. Just like someone else stated it's like calling the crime hot line you are anonymous on telling information on that and you are more forth coming just as you could be online. Being anonymous could protect to in your job, so that you can say what you want to and not have to worry about loosing your job over it. So I can see in some aspects to being anonymous on the Internet.

Being anonymous could also be a curse in that some aspects people could take advantage of it and use it in a hurtful or disrespectful manner. In this case you would hope that that wold be happening but then again in today's world it happens. It would be a curse if someone would use this to bully or threaten someone in some way. In this case then I don't think it really is anonymous because in the end I think they can track you down some how. Like when those teens/young adults bullied someone and it ends up in that person taking there own life. In the end I know they are able to track down who posted the information even if it is supposed to be anonymous I would think.

In the end I think that in some cases the posts can be anonymous and some should have to include who wrote it. So I think the big question is that can it really or is it really anonymous? I think one should be careful on what they post because it might not be to anonymous. I think people even though they have the freedom to speak what they want I think there is a line of accountability one should have.

  1. Hi Becky, You have summed this issue up very well. There are so many parts to it, aren't there? I had no idea...I just didn't grasp the scope of the subject. The opportunity of anonymity is there and it fits for many reasons...and as you mentioned, can also be used in a negative way. I like how you wrapped up your comments with the statement that rights need to be in place and having a conscious about what we're doing must too. Well done. Caron

  2. Becky, I think your right the internet takes up so much of our world and there are certainly ups and downs to being able to use it anonymously. As you pointed out it is good we have the ability to use it that way, but also that people do need to be held accountable for certain things they write and say on it. These are important points you bring up in a well written way. Nice job.... Doug

  3. Becky,
I liked the point you raised about the job protection angle. Who knows what is being scanned and monitored in these times.
